Continental Knitting

Before starting your knitting, you should gather all the materials that you need for the project, and just to give you some pointers here we outline some of the basic actions required by all knitters.

Please be aware these are only very simple, quick outlines, to get a more detailed understanding buy a knitting for beginners book or better still watch an instructional video. These just offer pointers towards the key elements you need to know about when you are just getting started.

Slip KnotThe first thing you have to do is to make a slip knot, here’s how to do it: The first thing you have to do is hold the tail of the yarn in your palm and wrap the yarn twice around two of your fingers: the index and the middle finger. You then pull the portion of yarn between your fingers, the one attached to the ball. You place the loop on the needle and you tighten it. This is a slip knot. You should not forget to leave an extra tail before casting on.

Casting on………The next step is casting on. You wind the tail end around your left thumb and wrap yarn over the left index finger. You now can see that you have a loop on your thumb. You insert the needle there and then behind the loop on your index finger. Take your thumb out of the loop and tighten the stitch.

A Knitting Stitch ………The third major action present in all knitting instructions is the making of a knit stitch. You should now have an empty needle in your hand. Insert the needle from front to back into the first stitch on the left needle. Pull the yarn between the two needles. Catch the yarn with the right needle and pull it through the stitch on the left needle. Slip the stitch off the left needle.

Purl Stitch ………..The next important step is the making a purl stitch. Keep the empty needle in the right hand. Insert the right needle into the first stitch; wrap the yarn around the right needle and then draw the yarn backwards through the stitch on the left needle.

Sometimes knitters think of a purl stitch s the opposite of a knit stitch. These two types of stitches are the most important and also a knit stitch is as important for a purl stitch as the latter is important for the first.

Finally ………….And, let’s say you have finished your garment. What do you do? You have to do something, otherwise the garment will unravel. This is a method for making an edge to your garment. After you have finished, you just cast off(binding) and start knitting or purling the first two stitches of the row. Use the left hand needle to pull the first stitch back up over the second stitch and over the tip of the right hand needle.

Other Useful Snippitsyou should not add a new ball of yarn in the middle of the row because there is the possibility that your knot will come undone, or : always try to knit the first stitch and then be sure you decrease or increase before the last stitch on the row. . If you have never knitted in your life or if you want to use new methods you need to follow knitting instructions, try following a family member who knits or as already suggested get a book , video or attend a class.

Certainly by reading knitting instructions you'll find out other interesting facts including the different styles and methods for example there are two major methods of knitting: the English style and the Continental style. In the English style the yarn with which you knit is carried in the right hand and that is why is also called right-hand knitting. The continental style is called the left-hand knitting. .

You can get useful advice by reading knitting instructions in books, on the internet, in videos but best of all is to get started & learn by your own mistakes
