There are many reasons why you should learn how to knit. It could be to have a hobby or to have something to help pass the time. There are three reasons, however, that I believe are most common. One is that you would be making your own article of clothing. Secondly, you can make gifts from the heart. The third, and very important, reason to learn to knit is that it can be very relaxing.
You can learn to knit so that you can custom make your own articles of clothing such as a sweater or skirt. You can use the pattern that you like along with your favorite color and texture of yarn. After you have had quite a lot of practice at knitting you can also alter the patterns a bit to come up with your own design. If you are really talented with your skill, you can fully design or come up with a new stitch that would make your sweater or shawl truly unique. This way you won't have to resort to buying anything that is mass produced and wind up looking like everyone else. Knitting items for yourself is not the only reason to learn to knit.
Making gifts from the heart is something you can do while learning to knit. Imagine how you and the recipient of the gift would feel when you give that person something you made. You would have a certain amount of pride in the time and effort you put into that gift. The person you made it for would enjoy the fact that the afghan or winter scarf was made especially for him/her. I know my dad had to have liked the winter scarf I made for him because he used it to keep his neck warm for quite a few cold winters. Along with knitting for yourself and making gifts, there is another reason that I believe is very important.
Knitting can be a very relaxing activity. While knitting, your focus is on the project at hand and not on the different things that are causing stress in your life. The rhythm of moving the needles and yarn back and forth have a calming effect. While the rows of stitches turn into something tangible like a sweater, or even a dress for your little girl's favorite doll, you also have a sense of satisfaction in knowing that you made it. I know that when I'm knitting, I feel more relaxed and have even surprised myself at how well the projects turned out when I completed them.
Now get out there and buy a skein of yarn in your favorite color, a pair of knitting needles, and a simple "Learn to Knit" book and get started. In no time at all you will be making a sweater for yourself or a heartfelt gift for someone else. In the meantime, your worries will fall away as you relax while knitting.
